Sailing Boats

Sailing boats provide a wide range of experiences depending on interest and preference, going from the safe and simple to the thrilling and difficult. [ Sailing boats ] are either centerboard boats which are smaller simpler off-the-beach dinghies, catamarans and small cruisers or keel boats. The term refers to a small sailboat or also to small racing yachts or recreational open sailing boats.

Dinghy sailing is popular with youth because of their simple operation and minimal maintenance and typically have three or fewer sails, the mainsail jib and spinnaker along with an overall length of seven to sixteen feet.

Sailing boats are distinguished apart from each other by size, hull configuration - monohull, catamaran or trimaran, keel type such as full, fin, wing, centerboard and the purpose being for sport, racing and cruising, number and configuration of masts, and sail plan.

There is no experience quite like the enjoyment of sailing with the wind pushing you along silently while hearing the air and the sound of the waves. These boats require a great amount of skill to sail properly, but gaining that skill is well worth the effort. Trips can be singlehanded or the sailing boats may be crewed by families or groups of friends or may sail singularly or be part of a

flotilla. Sailing boats may be operated by owners who gain pleasure from maintaining and modifying their craft or yacht rental s for the specific trip or cruise.

Sailing Yacht

The Dutch word 'jaghen', which means to pursue, chase or hunt, is where the terms 'yacht' and 'yachting' are derived from and evolved from the word 'jaght' denoting any light and swift ship. This vessel was used by the Dutch navy in pursuing pirates.

When in exile in the Netherlands, the English king, Charles II, observed the small sailing yachts and chose to return to England in 1660 on board one. Being the vessel which returned him home, the term 'sailing yacht' came to mean a vessel used to convey important persons. In time the king received a gift from the Dutch of a yacht named the 'Mary'.

This encouraged British shipbuilders to improve on the design. By 1661, two English yachts had been built, the 'Catherine' for King Charles, and the 'Anne' for the Duke of York. The first recorded race between two pleasure vessels was when the King beat the Duke of York on a course from Greenwich to Gravesend and back along the Thames.

Sailing yachts can range in overall length from about 6 metres (20ft) to well over 30 metres (98ft ) Cruising yachts, the most common yacht in private use, makes up most of the 7 metres (23ft) to 14 metres (46ft) range and these vessels can be quite complex in design.

Sailing yachts of this size are highly automated and such complexity requires dedicated power-generation systems. A hybrid type is a motor sailing yacht that can use either sail or propulsion or both as conditions dictate.

The joy of sailing is illustrated in the pleasures to be had from cruising under sail, at sea aboard a sailing yacht, out of sight of land, and responsible for your own destiny. Offshore cruising dates back to the mid 19th century where, the idea of cruising offshore in a small yacht was for the reckless and adventurous.

Sailing yacht pioneers Richard Tyrrell McMullen, who pioneered yacht cruising to John Macgregor, who cruised in a small sailing canoe and, American [ Joshua Slocum ], who, in 1898, aboard the 10.1m (36ft) Spray, completed a single-handed circumnavigation.

After the Second World War, marine plywood development was acknowledged by sailboat designers as the perfect building material for a strong, lightweight sailing dinghy and with basic carpentry, home construction became possible. Growing leisure time and disposable income created the desire and sailing became popular.

The sailing dinghy offers an exciting avenue to the thrills of sailing such as family camping, fast performance sailing or fun sailing. The sailing dinghy affords the most economical way to get afloat and is the relaxed way to learn to sail.
